What is a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE)?

A thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is a material that combines the elastic properties of rubber with the processing characteristics of thermoplastics. TPE behaves like rubber in terms of flexibility, while remaining melt-processable like plastic.

Thermoplastic elastomers are used in seals, profiles, hoses, protective components and technical parts where flexibility and dimensional stability must be combined.

What does TPE mean?

TPE stands for Thermoplastic Elastomer. The term refers to a group of materials that combine elastomeric (rubber-like) behavior with thermoplastic processing capabilities.

The material structure typically consists of elastic segments combined with thermoplastic segments, enabling both flexibility and reprocessability.

Is TPE rubber or plastic?

TPE is often described as thermoplastic rubber. However, technically it is not a traditional vulcanized rubber. It belongs to the thermoplastics category and can therefore be melted and reshaped.

Unlike conventional rubber (thermoset rubber), TPE does not require vulcanization. This allows processing through injection moulding and extrusion.

Difference between thermoplastics and elastomers

Thermoplastics are plastics that soften when heated and harden again when cooled. Elastomers are materials with rubber-like elasticity that return to their original shape after deformation.

A thermoplastic elastomer combines these characteristics: it is elastic like rubber but can be processed like a thermoplastic material.

Thermoplastic elastomers are characterized by:

  • Resistance to mechanical load
  • Recyclability and reprocessability

How is TPE processed?

TPE can be processed using injection moulding, extrusion and other thermoplastic manufacturing methods. In contrast to traditional rubber, no vulcanization process is required.

This makes TPE suitable for series production of profiles, seals and technical components with consistent dimensional accuracy.
