Seals & gaskets — types and materials
Seals and gaskets are used to control fluid, gas and particulate ingress or egress across a wide range of industrial and marine applications. Common product types include O-rings, flat gaskets, flange gaskets, molded seals, extruded profiles and trim. Typical elastomer and polymer choices specified for these functions include NBR (nitrile), EPDM, silicone, neoprene, fluorocarbon (FKM/Viton) and PTFE, with each material offering different resistance to temperature, chemicals and abrasion. Selection of material and design is typically driven by the operating medium, temperature range, surface finish and required sealing class.
Selection, sizing and technical support for seals and gaskets
Appropriate selection requires attention to geometry, cross-sectional profile, hardness (shore), compression set and mounting conditions. Technical information such as dimensional tolerances, compatibility charts and material data sheets can be requested to support specification and procurement decisions; certificates and test reports may be available depending on the product. Custom sizes and bespoke profiles can often be produced to customer drawings or samples. For examples of industry-standard flat gasket options, see the seals and flat gaskets collection.
